Cross-Country Analysis: The Role of Youth and NGOs in Violent Extremism and Radicalization Prevention Efforts in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia
Preventing violent extremism takes more than policies—it needs strong regional cooperation and local action.
Our new comparative research from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia highlights how youth and NGOs are leading prevention efforts, showcases successful initiatives, and offers clear recommendations for stronger, more inclusive prevention.
This cross-country analysis was developed with the support of the “SMART Balkans – Civil Society for Shared Society in the Western Balkans” regional project implemented by Centar za promociju civilnog društva (CPCD), Center for Research and Policy Making (CRPM) and Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) and financially supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA). Studim: “Country-level research Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia”
At the core of effective prevention of violent extremism is a clear understanding of local dynamics and actors. We have developed three country-level research in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia—each analyzing the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach in preventing violent extremism. These studies focus on how NGOs and youth contribute to local resilience and provide insight into how cooperation among local stakeholders can create stronger, safer communities. By focusing on grassroots efforts, the studies reveal how local actors are making prevention more effective and sustainable.
